Darjeeling, 27th March 2019: 21 candidates filed their nomination papers for Darjeeling Lok Sabha Constituency before the date for filing nomination came to an end on 26th March. The most prominent candidates who filed their nomination papers on the last date were Raju Bista from BJP supported by GNLF and GJM (Bimal Gurung) faction, Jana Andolan Party (JAP) President Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri, Former GJM (Bimal Gurung) faction spokeperson Swaraj Thapa, United Gorkha Revolutionary Front (UGRF) President Ajay Dahal, Gorkha United Liberation Front (GULF) President Reseeka Chettri, Amra Bangali’s nominee Nirodh Chandra Adhakri, Rastriya Jansachetna Party (RJP) Sunil Mondal, AABAB’s Din Bijoy Mondal and many other independents.
The nomination papers were filed at the District Magistrate’s conference hall in tight security. According to political analysts some candidates may withdraw their nomination but there are few chances this year. The political analysts are also of the opinion that the existence of a large number of candidates would divide popular vote drastically and no one candidate could win by a huge margin.
In Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and the surrounding regions, CPRM President R. B. Rai could garner sizable votes at the same time in Kalimpong and the surrounding regions Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri could also garner sizeable votes. Reseeka Chettri who is very popular with the younger generation could also garner sizeable vote as an independent candidate though she is associated with GULF. Swaraj Thapa who is contesting as an independent candidate may garner respectable votes from Darjeeling while Amara Bangali’s Nirodh Chandra Adhikari may garner respectable votes in Siliguri and the outskirts.
The major battle however, could be between TMC candidate Amar Singh Rai and BJP candidate Raju Bista.
