Sarita Rai resigns from party but will continue to serve as MLA

KALIMPONG, 2 DECEMBER 2017: Sarita Rai, the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kalimpong today resigned from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) along with other prominent leaders including GJM Kalimpong Branch President Dr. R. B. Bhujel (President, Kalimpong), Subha Pradhan (Kalimpong Municipal Chairman) as well as Kumar Chamling, party spokesperson for the party and Bijoy Sundas among others. However, inquired as to whether she would resign from the post of MLA, she said that she would continue to work for her Constituency viz., Kalimpong as the MLA and would not resign from the same. She said that at the present moment it would not be a right idea to resign from the post of MLA. However, in the future if the need thus arose and that her giving resignation served the cause of the separate state of Gorkhaland, she would definitely resign from the post of MLA posthaste. However, at present she would give priority to Kalimpong and work for her.
She said that Kalimpong was no longer a mere subdivision of Darjeeling District but a District on her own and as such she (Kalimpong) needed to create a place of her own. She said that the people in the district of Kalimpong were primarily depended upon agriculture since there were only six tea gardens. She said that she would continue to work for the people in her constituency.
