KALIMPONG, 17 DECEMBER 2017: Sabala Mela or Fair 2017 is presently being held in Kalimpong. The mela organised by Self Help Group and Self Employment Department, District magistrate Office Kalimpong will come to an end on the 21st of December. The main objective of the mela is to promote various self help groups and self employment opportunities in the district. The mela was inaugurated by the District Magistrate of Kalimpong.
Various stalls have been erected where different products of the region are being promoted. These include food products, handicrafts, traditional clothes, bamboo works, horticulture among many others. Partho Dey, District Panchayat Rural Development Officer while speaking to ‘The Himalayan Beacon’ said that the motto of the fair was to promote women empowerment particularly the women of rural areas. Dey said that the Sabala Fair would promote the various rural products from the region including traditional handicrafts, food products, horticulture among many others. He said that various departments of the West Bengal government were cooperating and taking part in the fair in order to promote the products.
Dey said that Kalimpong had a very good farm culture and very good quality food products were being produced. He said that his department was also organizing health awareness camps in various villages throughout the district.
