KALIMPONG, 31 DECEMBER 2017: In a stark contrast to Darjeeling where much fanfare and public participation was witnessed at Chowrasta during the Teesta Rangeet Tourism Festival, Kalimpong offered no show. A large number of locals remained away from fanfare and festivity. So much so that a large number of chairs remained vacant during the festivity organised at Mela Ground in Kalimpong.
According to political observers, the ‘Sansad Chalo Abhiyan’ of the Jan Andolan Party (JAP) whence more the all the 200 cadres were arrested in New Delhi when in Darjeeling Hills Tourism Festival was in full swing upset a large number of people. Many simply choose to stay away from the festival. Many political observers also believe that this shows a marked difference between the people of the hills over the issue of development versus the separate state of Gorkhaland. In the coming months, this could further bifurcate.
