Massive Fire destroys British Raj Heritage Cinchona Bungalow at Mungpoo

KALIMPONG, 14 JANUARY 2018: Fire broke out today at Old Cinchona Manager’s Bungalow Headquarters at around 11.30. The British Era bungalow was situated near the Cinchona Director’s bungalow in Mungpoo, The fire completely destroyed the Heritage Bungalow. No one was injured,
Cinchona Director Dr. Samuel Rai along with other officials visited the spot. Police officers also visited the spot to ascertain as to what caused the fire. By the time the Fire Brigade arrived the bungalow had been completely destroyed.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained through unconfirmed reports suggest the fire was a result of a short-circuit.
The Cinchona cultivation in India begun under the direction of Dr.Thomas Anderson, the then Superintendent of the Royal Botanical Garden, Calcutta. Dr. Anderson started his experimental trial for cultivation of Cinchona in Darjeeling hills and ultimately selected Mungpoo Hills in 1862 for commercial cultivation.
