glinker 80 pix RANCHI: Salute to the Gorkha spirit Ranchi, Jan. 5: Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP)-1 will soon boast a Gorkha deputy superintendent of police.

Director-general of police Neyaz Ahmed made an assurance to this effect while addressing a gathering on the occasion of the 131st Foundation Day of the first battalion of Jharkhand Armed Police at Doranda, today.

Not surprisingly, because the contribution of Gorkha jawans in JAP-1 has been glorious. “It is a matter of pride to become a part of JAP-1. Gorkha jawans of this battalion are in high demand for providing security to VVIPs and VIPs. Keeping this in view, a recommendation has been made to have at least one Gorkha DSP of the battalion to maintain its glorious tradition and I hope the there will be one soon,” said Ahmed.

Gorkha jawans welcomed Ahmed’s speech with loud applause.

There are four sanctioned DSP posts in JAP-1, of which two posts are vacant and none of the posted DSPs is Gorkha.

Ahmed also gave his word to solve the housing problem of Gorkha jawans.

Earlier, he honoured as many as 15 Gorkha jawans (or their family members, in case of posthumous awards) for acts of exemplary bravery. Of the 15 honoured, one was Laxmi Tamang, whose son, Kundan lay down his life battling extremists in Rania on June 22, 2004.

Later,Anand Mela, a fair, was inaugurated on JAP-1 grounds by JAP inspector-general, K.S. Meena. The fair boasted as many as 70 stalls, with the majority of stalls run by Gorkha families. The fair will continue for three days.
