“Education, as a concept, as an agent of development, has caught the imagination of people engaged in all activities worldwide. We are aware that in India the earliest system of education was based on gurukul tradition preparing children for an ideal life subscribing to the principles of moral rectitude. In a closed society education, unlike in the modern sense of the term, was an end in itself. However, the country swiftly embraced modern education and thereby became the knowledge with Indians as knowledge providers across the globe. No wonder, a person none other than US President Mr. Barack Obama, by his own submission, is seeking to educate his students to compete with people in Bangalore or Beijing!” This is said by Chief Minister Dr. Pawan Chamling in his address as chief guest on the concluding day, October 30, of the Silver Jubilee celebration of Holy Cross School, Tadong, at the school premises. Chief Minister praised the school saying, “Holy Cross School has remained one of our valued partners to impart quality education to our children. I am very pleased to attend the Silver Jubilee of this School to share joys with you for all the achievements made by you and imagining a future that is more secure in every aspect. I have come to meet the young minds here out of love and respect and to honour the teaching community engaged in this great task of nation building”. Read the rest of this entry »

THE HIMALAYAN BEACON [BEACON ONLINE] EXCLUSIVE
BY DARJ MAN
Barun Roy is justified in musing the imaginable event about to unfold in the very near foreseeable future. However at the same time various statements issued by GJM reckons certain core issues related to the setup whichever is attempted, still seems to be uncertain to be agreed upon for a final settlement. One is related to the territorial aspects of the setup. That being, whether the Dooars Terai [meaning the earlier Bhutanese territories of Kalimpong subdivision and the 11 Dooars (1865)and the other being Sikkimese Terai- Siliguri subdivision (1835) of Darjeeling District (1866)], will be included or not is a question in everyone’s’ lips but more or less the answer is anticipated in a negative sense. Which when delivered in the affirmation of non inclusion of these plain areas would surely be a rabble rousing event. It would be episodic to further galvanizing of opposition political parties of all hues under one umbrella, which is already visible to whether the storm created by the ruling party but already weakened by the consideration of unfolding event and times. That being particularly more pronounced if the Siliguri and Dooars Terai are excluded from the Setup.
This will certainly amount to repeating the 1988 Gorkhaland Accord, which then was unchallenged and no perceptible reaction was noticed, except silent murmurs of discontentment. Under the present times then, more particularly the dictatorial attitude of GNLF arising out of three years of violent agitation which had practically suppressed all public opinion was endured silently repressed. In the same vein, whatever setup accepted by GJM, particularly, if it is without Dooars Terai, it is doubtful whether any forceful voice and action is anticipated at this stage. No doubt in regard to this issue the majority of the public will be dissatisfied, but may not form the strength of an opinion and accept it as fait accompli. Read the rest of this entry »
