THE HIMALAYAN BEACON [BEACON ONLINE]
BY SHYAM KUMAR PRADHAN
With “We care to Serve” as the prime motto in the Silver Jubilee year of the school throughout the year has tried to serve and help the needy in some way or the other. The ‘International Literacy Day’ was celebrated with full enthusiasm by everybody in the school on 7th September 2010. The year was filled with lot of programmes based on community based services. There was a ‘Literacy Drive Programme’ held in the school March 2010 where all the maid servants were given an opportunity to educate themselves. Not only the teachers helped the Literacy drive students to educate inspite of the busy schedule but the students also helped make the programme successful by contributing a part of their pocket money everyday. In the course of time, the students of the Literacy Drive Programme were provided with various stationeries like Pencils, books, pens, erasers, etc.
Among all the students, two of the fortunate students who really showed a keen interest were given a chance to do their regular classes in the school. All the expenses of these two students will be taken by the school authority.
To make this programme a successful one, a lot of credit goes to the sponsors who were kind enough to sponsors various materials to the students of the Literacy Drive. To name a few were Mr. Raj Singhi of Raj Enterprises, Gangtok; Mrs. Tatini Biswas and Sr. Jessy Mathew, teacher and Principal of Holy Cross School, Tadong respectively. Read the rest of this entry »

THE HIMALAYAN BEACON [BEACON ONLINE]
THROUGH MARG PRESS RELEASE
BY NIRNAY JOHN
As I woke up and came out to the veranda on 8th morning I was surprised to see that the clouds had vanished and Mount Kanchanjunga stood bright and tall. It was after a long time Darjeeling had witnessed this sight since it has been raining every day here in the hills. I headed towards church as I had offered a special mass and wanted to thank the person above for showering his blessings on MARG and its children. It was on this very day on 8th September 2006 MARG was registered and we were celebrating its 4th anniversary.
During the Holy Mass I thanked the Lord, prayed for our children, sponsors and well wishers for making what MARG is today. As the day passed by around 3:00pm it started raining heavily. I was worried but at the same time I was looking forward to our programme in the evening at Divya Vani. Read the rest of this entry »

FROM THE STATESMAN
SILIGURI, 9 SEPT: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha today rejected the Darjeeling MP Mr Jaswant Singh’s counsel to nominate members to the proposed interim council from all the political parties with presence in the hills and in accordance with the Reservation policy prevailing in the country.
Visibly embarrassed, the GJMM media secretary, Dr Harka Bahadur Chhetri said in Siliguri on return from New Delhi today that Mr Singh had not been authorised by the party to comment on crucial policy matters. “A BJP veteran, he seems unaware of the stand my party has taken on the matter. What he said is his personal stand and maybe, it is the stand of the party he belongs to,” Dr Chhetri said.
Mr Singh’s comment crated flutters in the political circles yesterday when he categorically stated that the nominated council should involve not just the political parties with presence in the hills but all socio-economic categories listed in the Reservation schedule including the SC, ST, OBC and the women.
Rejecting Mr Singh’s assertions, Dr Chhetri said that being the true representative of the hill populace his party should have the right to nominate members to the proposed interim council. “None from the party central committee would be nominated. We would remain absorbed in carrying on with the statehood struggle as the interim council being envisaged for the hills would be a mere revised version of the much-hated Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council,” he said.
