KALIMPONG, 10 FEBRUARY 2018: The Kalimpong District Administration aims at making Kalimpong District Tobacco Free. The district administration is organizing awareness camps at various places towards this end.
Yesterday, a team comprising of Sriman Banerjee, Deputy Magistrate, Biswajit Mandal, Deputy Magistrate, Dr. Zima, Kalimpong Municipality and Dawa Sherpa, OC, Kalimpong Police Station visited Saptashri Gyanpeeth in Kalimpong and met the school authorities. The team members said that no shop will be allowed to sell tobacco products like gutkha, cigarette, tobacco pouch within 100 metres of the school. The school authority in turn requested that a board be placed before the school calling for ban in smoking within 100 metres of the school.
Speaking to ‘The Himalayan Beacon’ Sriman Banerjee, Deputy Magistrate said that the idea was to declare Kalimpong Tobbaco Free District through a step by step process. He said that presently the district administration was working towards generating awareness about not smoking or using tobacco products within 100 yards from the schools, colleges and other public places. Soon raid and seize operations will be organised and any shop selling tobacco products will be raided and the products seized. The offending shops will be fined and if they continue to sell tobacco their licenses will be cancelled.
