DARJEELING, 23 NOVEMBER 2017: Anup Mitra, advocate appearing as core counsel for Bimal Gurung has released a press statement clarifying on the 20 November 2017 order passed by the Supreme Court. Mitra stated that he wanted to make clear that the said Supreme Court order has protected Bimal Gurung from all pending criminal cases named or not named in the FIR totaling around 300 cases all over in the affected areas such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Terai and Dooars.

He further stated that there were rumours being circulated that the order passed by the apex court was effective only for 14 days, which he said was not correct. He said that the 14 days was the time given to the respondents including the State Government to reply. Considering the circumstances stated, Bimal Gurung was thus free to decided about his movement, programme and activities.

Mitra also stated that it was Gurung’s absolute prerogative and he was not answerable to any irrelevant characters and questions in this regard.

Ultimately, Mitra stated that sometimes they the lawyers also worked for free for their clients suggesting that he working free for Bimal Gurung.
