KALIMPONG, 10 JANUARY 2018: Ramesh Tamang, President of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Sonada Constitutency has been arrested by the police. He was arrested from his house at around 10 pm. Tamang’s arrest has been strongly condemned by Gorkha United Liberation Front (GULF). In a statement made to ‘The Himalayan Beacon’, Subarna Khati, organising secretary of the party said that such was the condition in Darjeeling Hills that the people could not even indulge in peaceful political activities. People who were demanding separate statehood were being arrested and harassed. The statement said that Darjeeling Hills had been incorporated in West Bengal under the Absorbed Area Act 1954 for administrative expedency only. But this became the most unfortunate act for the people of the Hills. This has been an accepted fact and have been documented even in the ‘White Paper’ titled ‘West Bengal Gorkhaland Movement Documentation’. With the acknowledgement of the fact that Darjeeling Hills was incorporated within Bengal, the West Bengal Government has also acknowledge the fact that Darjeeling Hills was not theirs, the statement said.
Khati in the statement alleged that Gorkhas were being harassed by implicating them under IPC, CRPC, UPA among other sections of the law. Khati questioned the lack of unity among the Gorkhas and stated that Gorkhas need to unite if at all their dreams could be fulfilled.
