BREAKING NEWS: Darjeeling SP Amit Javalgi removed from post – Mamata Banerjee leaves Darjeeling Hills

DARJEELING, 10th June, 2017: According to Press Trust of India (PTI) report Darjeeling Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Javalgi has been removed from his post. Though not yet formally  appointed by the State Government, Deputy Commissioner (Central), Kolkata Police, Akhilesh Chaturvedi is tipped to be the new SP of Darjeeling, according to a senior Kolkata Police official as quoted by PTI.

The chief minister had earlier said that a three-member team comprising senior IPS officers had been formed to look after the law-and-order situation in Darjeeling.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) had called a 12-hour strike in the hills alleging high handedness when scores of its cadres were injured and teargassed by the police while on Dharna. Meanwile the Army is out on the streets in Darjeeling and two other hill towns 0f Kalimpong and Kurseong keeping an eye on the situation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee meanwhile left Darjeeling in the night of 9th of June after taking stock of the situation in the hills. She started from Darjeeling town at around 10 pm and reached Siliguri after over two hours. Banerjee would spend the night at Uttar Kanya, the mini- secretariat in north Bengal, and will monitor the situation in the hills from there.

She was slated to leave earlier but chose to stay back after law and order situation escalated minutes after she had concluded her cabinet meeting.
