KALIMPONG, 13 JANUARY 2018: People today flocked to the main square of the town carrying plaques with late Barun Bhujel’s photo demanding justice. It may be noted that Barun Bhujel was an elected Ward Commissioner of Kalimpong Municipality and a leader of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). He had been arrested in June 2017 during the 104 days agitation. He subsequently died at SSKM Hospital while still under police custody. He was 40 years old. Since then there has been a constant allegation of Bhujel’s death due to police torture while being in prison. While the police has refuted the case there has been no closure as to what actually led to Barun Bhujel’s death.
Barun Bhujel’s widow Sabita Bhujel while speaking to ‘The Himalayan Beacon’ today said that her husband had been a victim of police torture and as a result he died. She said that she would know act the High Court’s door seeking justice. She said that the how and why of her husband’s untimely death must be revealed and justice had to be served.
A large number of people today joined Bhujel’s widow and raised slogans demanding justice. A number of them alleged that Barun Bhujel would have been alive had not the police tortured him in custody.
