DARJEELING, 29TH OCTOBER, 2017: The question of “Will he or won’t he make public appearance on the 30th of October” has been answered. Bimal Gurung, the chief of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) will not be making a public appearance on the 30th of October as he had earlier promised.

Roshan Giri, the general secretary of the party has said that since the Central Government will be announcing the date of the Tripartite Talks soon, Gurung’s public appearance could spur the State Government into arresting him and thus leading to turn in the situation in the Hills. Presently, the hills are limping back to normality and the tourists have begun to trickle.

Giri said that Gurung had been advised not to make the proposed public appearance since it could jeopardize the upcoming talks. The advice has come from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership too and as such Gurung has agreed not to make any public appearance forthwith.

As per the information being received there is a possibility of the Central Government inviting both Bimal Gurung faction and the Binay Tamang – Anit Thapa faction of the GJM in the Tripartite Talks.

It might be noted that Gurung had first made announced his proposed public appearance of 30th October on the 12th of October. The Police had raided Barnesbeg Tea Garden and the surrounding areas including Lepcha Busty and the adjoining Bengal-Sikkim border in search of Bimal Gurung and his cadres. Sub-inspector Amitabh Mullick died allegedly after being shot by the GJM armed cadres. The police also allegedly recovered a cache of arms and ammunition.
