New Delhi, Jun 5:) Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was today summoned by a city court on July 7 as an accused in the Sunanda Pushkar death case after it took cognisance of the police charge sheet in which he was charged with abetting the suicide of his wife.

In a setback to Tharoor, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal while asking the Lok Sabha MP to appear before the court said there exists sufficient grounds to proceed against him for alleged offences of abetment of suicide and committing cruelty towards Pushkar.

Tharoor, 62, dubbed the charges as “preposterous and baseless” and the product of a malicious and vindictive campaign against him that he will “vigorously contest”.

New Delhi, Jun 5 (PTI) The Indian sporting fraternity, led by sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, today hailed the national football team skipper Sunil Chhetri for his “super achievement” of playing 100 matches for the country.

Chhetri became only the second Indian footballer after former captain Bhaichung Bhutia to feature in 100 matches for the country. The landmark game was the one against Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup in Mumbai last night.

Mumbai, Jun 2 (PTI) Captain Sunil Chettri starred in India’s 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei by registering his third career-hat-trick but the feat didn’t invoke wild celebrations from the striker, who said that he is someone who doesn’t like to “celebrate outrageously” on the field.

The match against Chinese Taipei at the Mumbai Football Arena last night also marked 99th cap for Chhetri, who also scored his 59th international goal.

Gangtok, May 31 (PTI) Former footballer Bhaichung Bhutia today launched his new political outfit, Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), in his native state Sikkim.

The launch took place at a public meeting at Daramdin in West Sikkim, located 104 km away from the state capital Gangtok.

The ace footballer was accompanied by senior colleague and former minister RB Subba as he unfurled the party’s flag before addressing the audience.

Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, Bhaichung said corruption is rampant in the state and there has been no development of Sikkim over the past four decades.

KALIMPONG, 29th MAY 2018: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and developing tourism in Darjeeling Hills and said that a meeting with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) will be held on Wednesday on the issue, while addressing an administrative meeting at Dr Graham’s Home Ground Tuesday afternoon.

“We want peace here. Peace helps in achieving targets and when there is no peace it affects even that work which is about to achieve success,” she said, as reported by PTI.

Kathmandu, May 20 (PTI) Nepal will close the Indian Embassy’s field office in the near future as it has “outlived its purpose”, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has said.

India was permitted to set up the temporary field office in 2008 to issue passes to vehicles for plying on Indian roads in the bordering regions after Koshi floods severely damaged a 17-km stretch of the east-west highway.

Bengaluru, May 18 (PTI) It was double glory for skipper Sunil Chhetri as he was named Bengaluru FC’s top scorer for the fifth season in a row besides bagging the Players’ Player of The Year award at the club’s Annual Awards night here.

Chhetri claimed the top scorer award with 24 goals across three competitions, ahead of teammate Miku, who had 20 against his name.

Chhetri also scored in Bengaluru FC’s last match — 4-0 win over Abahani Dhaka — a result that enables the Blues’ to enter the knockout stages of the AFC Cup for the fourth season running.

New Delhi, May 16(PTI) Within 24 hours after Delhi University threw open its admission portal to aspirants, over 43,000 applicants submitted their forms for various undergraduate courses.

“Since 6 pm yesterday, we have received 43,000 applications and there has been no technical glitches reported from our side,” said an official associated with admissions.

Kolkata, May 14 (PTI) Opposition parties in West Bengal slammed the State Election Commission for “failing” to conduct the rural polls in a free and fair manner and accused the ruling TMC of letting loose a reign of terror which lead to the killing of at least 12 people during the polling today.

The Trinamool Congress has termed the allegations “baseless and concocted”.

Union Minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo tweeted, “It is for the world to see how TMC lets WB’s Maa Maati Manush suffer in utter chaos. Bengal gets wounded and sheds blood every time TMC goons brutally attack the state’s democracy and peace. Dreadful visuals of the Panchayat Polls prove just that.”

Kolkata, Mar 23 (PTI) Voting for the five Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal ended at 4 pm today and all the six candidates in the fray were present in the Assembly premises during the polling.

The voting had begun at 9 am.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee along with other ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs, cast their votes. Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan along with other Congress MLAs also exercised their franchise.

Hyderabad, Mar 18 (PTI) Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, who is rallying support for establishment of a non-BJP and non-Congress alternative, will meet his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee tomorrow in Kolkata.

Rao had recently said a non-Congress and non-BJP front should be formed in the country, as he called for a “qualitative change” in politics and had also announced that he was ready to take on the mantle of leading a political front.

Kolkata, Mar 2 (PTI) West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh today claimed that the party is emerging as an alternative to the ruling TMC in the state as the Congress and the CPI(M) have failed to put up a resistance against the misrule of the ruling party.

He claimed that TMC after returning to power in the 2016 it has lost control over the administration, unions and its local leaders.

There are violent clashes in various educational institutions in the state, he said adding “TMC workers are now fighting each other over money, soon they will fight for election tickets.

Kolkata, Feb 26 (PTI) Former India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia today announced his decision to quit the Trinamool Congress.

The footballer, who contested elections twice as a Trinamool Congress candidate and lost both times, took to social media to announce his decision.

“As of today I have officially resigned from the membership and all the official and political posts of All India Trinamool Congress party. I am no longer a member or associated with any political party in India,” Bhutia said in a tweet.
