[[GANGTOK]],22nd JULY: On the chairmanship of Indian Journalist Union (IJU) president SN Sinha, the working journalists of Sikkim have formed the Sikkim unit of IJU, that is, Journalist Union of Sikkim (JUS) to raise the issues pertaining to the rights and interest of working journalist fraternity in the state, on 22nd July 2012 at the Press Club of Sikkim. As per the release issued by the JUS it is stated that the working journalists union has affiliated itself to the national union to rise various problems and the issues of the fraternity working in Sikkim.
The chairman Sinha while addressing the meeting of journalist at PCS today stressed on the reasonability and the necessity of affiliating state unit of journalists association to the organization of national stature, for the redressal of the problems of the journalist at various level. The IJU has its state units in 23 states of India and Sikkim has joined the league today as 24th state. In the meeting, the general secretary of Northeastern region also the president of Assam Journalist Union, Geetartha Pathak while addressing the journalist highlighted various problems that the working journalists have been facing in the Northeastern India. Sub-editor of the news paper Akham Vani, Purnandu Laskarvani was also present in the meeting.
The JUS has unanimously adopted the resolution to form the executive committee of the union. With Bhim Rawat as its president, Ms Neeta Nirash, Vishnu Neopaney and KK Chettri have been nominated as the Vice-presidents, Joseph Lepcha as the general secretary. Nirmal Manger , Shekhar Khawas and Pradeep Mizar as the joint secretaries. As the treasurer Prabin Khaling and Samir Subba as assistant treasurer. As publicity secretaries Bishal Gurung and Chewan K. Dahal. The following 15 members are included as the executive members of the JUS, namely, Roshan Chettri (The Sikkim Daily Encounter), Rupesh Sharma (Himalibela), Ms Menuka Pandey (Samay Dainik), Prakash Adhikari (News Live), Anusha Gurung (Sikkim Now), Chandra Prashad Dahal (Hamro Prajasakti), Amber Lachikathi (Himalaya Darpan), Bijoy Gurung (Sikkim Express), Arjun Piyush (Himilibela), Sandeep Rai (Himalayan Mirror), Homnath Dabari (Samay Dainik), Sanjay Agrawal (District convener, East ), Wangchuk Bhutia (District convener, North ), Ms Namo Dixit (District convener, South) and Madhu Sharma (District convener, West) .
The IJU has assured that the issues of working journalist in Sikkim will be aroused in the national level. The newly formed JUS will organize two day long national seminar on the problems of the journalist and news papers in India on 6th and 7th of October ,2012. On the occasion the IJU has also decided to hold the convention of the national executive committee at Gangtok, Sikkim.
