Darjeeling, 25 July 2012: Commemorating the sacrifices of the people for the separate State of Gorkhaland the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) will be observing the Martyrs Day across the Hills which fall on July 27.
The GJM Town Committee General Secretary, Narayan Pradhan today informed that the day will be observed in all the sub divisions viz Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik. GJM Chief, Bimal Gurung will be present on the day at Darjeeling, he added. The day is to remember and pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives during the Gorkhaland agitation. Along with the GJM Chief all the MLAs and the party members will be present on the day, said Pradhan. The families of the martyrs will also be honoured on the occasion.
It may be recalled that, on 7th October 2007; Bimal Gurung formed the GJM party at Darjeeling motor stand upholding Gandhian principles and started the agitation for the demand of Gorkhaland. He thoroughly remained underground during the agitation. It was then in 25th July, 2008 GJM Naari Morcha active member Pramila Sharma was murdered at Darjeeling and similarly on 9th February 2009 GJM party cadre Akbar Lama was killed. During the GJM agitation of Dooars Chalo Abhiyan three party cadres namely, Nita Khawas, Bimla Rai and Bicky Lama became martyrs at Shibsu on 10th February, 2011.
Since 2008 the day is observed as the Martyrs day in the Hills. The sacrifices of the 1200 lives in the 1986 agitation are also remembered on the day.
