Sporting Clube de Portugal, popularly known as Sporting Lisbon football club, on Thursday signed India striker Sunil Chhetri to play for its reserve team.
“With the aim of breaking ground in one of FIFA’s most highly regarded markets, where more than 20 million players apply their trade, Sporting has put pen to paper with the Indian national team captain Sunil Chhetri, who will now join up with the club’s reserve side,” the top Portuguese club said on its website.
“I don’t know what I will achieve there but I will work hard as I can. I will work hard to the extent that I don’t have to regret anything later in life,” said Chhetri at a media conference.

Kalimpong, July 5, 2012: The Gorkhaland Rajya Nirman Morcha (GRNM) has decided not to contest the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) elections scheduled on July 29, 2012. Interacting with the reporters the GNRM President, Dawa Pakhrin today said that the party’s ultimate aim is a separate State, Gorkhaland and hence it shall not accept any of the optional systems of the State Government. He also informed that the party resigned from the Council in 2005 for the sake of Gorkhaland.
Further, he notified that along with them the GJM Chief, Bimal Gurung too had resigned from the Council, but later he joined back, which only seemed like putting the old wine in the same bottle. “The GTA is just a painkiller for the hills by the State and the Centre Government” said Pakhrin. Now the GRNM President remains hopeful that their ally Gorkhaland Task Force (GTF) will also clear their stand on the GTA elections at the earliest.
The GRNM Central Committee meeting which was held today also replaced the General Secretary, Tika Khati with John Poudyal. Informing on the same Pakhrin said that Khati earlier along with the Citizen Forum had met the State Government and had hinted to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

DARJEELING: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) President Bimal Gurung will be announcing the names of 41 candidates for the July 29 GTA polls. The name of the candidates will be revealed in a meeting being held at Gymkhana Hall today. The party President announced the names of two candidates yesterday during a public meeting at Mirik. The candidates are Arun Sischi (Munna) for Soureni Constituency and Anita Thapa for the Kurseong Town Constituency.
Meanwhile, there has been a group of leaders from the hills who have joined Trinamul Congress (TMC) have said that they want to contest the GTA polls while a number of TMC leaders from Kalimpong has said that the party will be supporting independent candidates. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be arriving in Darjeeling on 12th of July 2012. She will be visiting Takdah whence she will leave for Kalimpong to celebrate Bhanu Jayanti. However, the last day for filing of nomination papers being 9th of July 2012, some TMC leaders are apprehensive that it might be too late before they get a chance to apprise their leaders of the desire to contest the GTA polls.
“People should not compare DGHC with GTA. DGHC comprised of a Chairman and Councillors. GTA comprises of a Chief and the Members.”

Darjeeling, July 4: Trinamul Congress supporters in the Darjeeling hills are more interested in hearing Mamata Banerjee declare the party’s decision to contest the elections to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Sabha than her visit here next week.
“We want to contest the GTA elections. We believe there is resentment against the Morcha and our candidates can put up a strong fight. We will definitely field candidates in Jorebunglow, Darjeeling Sadar constituencies and Tukvar (which is considered a fiefdom of Morcha president Bimal Gurung),” said a Trinamul leader.
